Pukka Pies, the UK savoury pies supplier, is looking to “significantly enhance its manufacturing capacity and capability” with investment at its factory in Leicestershire.

The privately-owned business is spending GBP4.5m (US$6.2m) at the site in Syston, announcing the investment alongside a set of annual accounts to the end of May 2020.

“We want to put more pies on more plates more often and that means a significant investment to ensure we are enhancing the capability and capacity of our bakery,” CEO Deborah Ewan said.

In the 12 months to 25 May, Pukka Pies’ turnover inched up 0.7% to GBP53.1m, with its business to foodservice hit in the final quarter of the period in the early weeks of the pandemic.

The company managed to grow its operating profit by 13.8% to GBP4m and its net profit by 13.5% to GBP4.1m, helped by proceeds from the “disposal of property, plant and equipment”, its accounts read.

Pukka Pies, in commentary alongside the accounts, which were filed at Companies House last week, said the numbers represent “another successful year despite an impact on its foodservice division due to Covid-19”.
