UK discount retailer Poundland has said it is considering launching a range of private-label food.

The retailer offers a selection of branded products and last month it added around 100 products to the brands it sells, including Whitworths brown sugar, Kellogg‘s Cornflakes and Heinz soup.

However, Richard Lancaster, Poundland’s trading director, said the group is now looking at offering an own-label range

“We know our customers love the amazing value we offer on own brand products. We are currently assessing whether customer demand is there for a venture into private label food. No decisions have yet been made however it is an area of the business we will be reviewing in the coming months,” he said.

In July, Poundland appointed former Tesco finance director Andrew Higginson as its chairman.

CEO Jim McCarthy said at the time Higginson’s “strategic skills and retail experience” will be “invaluable” to Poundland as it continues to grow its business in the UK and Ireland, and “evaluate a number of other growth opportunities”.
