Duchy Originals, a UK food company overseen by Prince Charles, will soon source organic cocoa from farmers in Guyana for its line of chocolate biscuits.

The prince first suggested the arrangement in 2000 as a means of reviving the disused cocoa plantations in the former British colony. Two years later, the first crop is to be harvested and processed for use in his Organic Dark Chocolate Thins.

Charles revealed yesterday [Thursday] that the project has seen “small farmers from the disadvantaged Amerindian community to come together in mutual self-help.

“These Amerindian farmers have blazed a trail which other farmers in Guyana are likely to follow in the months ahead with different produce.”
