Sainsbury’s hopes to almost double the value of its Fairtrade sales over the next four years, the UK supermarket group said today (28 February).

In an announcement released to coincide with Fairtrade Fortnight in the UK, the retailer said that it is eyeing Fairtrade sales of GBP500m (US$812.2m) by 2015. Currently Sainsbury’s generates revenues from Faairtrade sales totalling GBP276m, or one in every four pounds spent on Fairtrade products in the country.

just-food understands that Sainsbury’s expects to grow Fairtrade sales incrementally with the company’s total sales growth, which was up 7% for the first half to 2 October. The UK retailer also anticipates switching more of its own-label products to Fairtrade certified sauces thereby increasing its offering of Fairtrade lines.
