UK salmon processor The Scottish Salmon Company, formerly Lighthouse Caledonia, is to re-open a plant on the island of Stornoway.

The company, which started trading under its new name on Oslo’s stock exchange last week, will start production at the site in the autumn.

The move will create 70 jobs; when the Stornoway plant was mothballed in December 2008, some 130 staff were made redundant.

A spokesperson for the company said employing 70 staff would “meet immediate demand for processing on the island” but she added: “As part of the growth plans, [the company] will be looking to increase that number in that time.”

The site was closed in 2008 after Lighthouse Caledonia fell into financial difficulties. Private-equity firm Northern Link provided the business with a cash injection and took a stake of more than 50% in the company.

Northern Link remains the majority shareholder in The Scottish Salmon Company, which is listed on the Oslo Axess exchange under the ticker symbol SSC.
