The company, which rejected a takeover approach in June, said like-for-like sales slid 0.2% during the seven-week period to 16 August, reported Reuters.

Like-for-like sales at its Somerfield stores increased 3.2% during the period, but its discount chain Kwik Save posted a 4.7% fall in sales on a like-for-like basis.

The company said, however, that for the whole first quarter (16 weeks to 16 August), group sales climbed 0.5% on a like-for-like basis, with a 2% rise at Somerfield and a 1.5% fall at Kwik Save.

“Overall, the performance has been in line with management’s expectations,” Somerfield was quoted by Reuters as saying.

The company said a promotional programme in the first quarter of last year had helped to raise sales at the Kwik Save chain.

“The promotional programme was not repeated this year, with a correspondingly negative impact on like-for-like sales, but margins have remained stable,” Somerfield said.
