Spanish supermarket chain Eroski has signed a deal with Oriel Jones’ Abattoir of Llanybydder, West Wales that will put Welsh hill lambback on the shelves in over 70 hypermarkets and 500 supermarkets in Spain for the first time in five years.
Cuts from over 3000 hill lambs a week will be supplied in a deal worth an estimated £750,000 (US$1.3m) to the industry in Wales, Oriel Jones said.
“Oriel Jones and son are delighted to announce that a deal has been struck with Eroski to once again supply Welsh lamb for their hypermarket and supermarket business,” said Paul Edwards, Managing Director of Oriel Jones and Son., “We at Oriel Jones feel excited by the fact that Eroski were enthusiastic in wanting to return to Welsh lamb and branding it as such. In this matter Oriel Jones would like to congratulate Hybu Cig Cymru on their sterling effort on behalf of the Welsh meat industry and Welsh farmers in helping to facilitate this contract negotiation.”
“This is great news for the Welsh lamb industry especially as we have succeeded in reopening a strong market for the smaller hill lambs that we produce here in Wales,” said Rees Roberts, chairman of Hybu Cig Cymru, the Welsh meat promotion body.
