Spar stores in the UK have rolled out a marketing campaign that compares its prices with those in Tesco’s convenience outlets.

Blakemore Trade Partners, which acts as a wholesaler for Spar International in the UK, has launched the scheme, which compares prices with those in Tesco Express stores.

The programme compares prices on 2,600 Tesco Express lines. Every four weeks new lists of product matches are issued to participating stores, Blakemore said.

“We benchmark 2,600 lines on a regular basis,” Blakemore Trade Partners marketing director Richard Harman said. “We felt that it meant more to the shopper to have something that could be truly comparable against.”

The company said it is not looking at extending the programme to price matching Sainsbury’s Local outlets or other convenience rivals like Costcutter or Budgens. “Everyone benchmarks against Tesco to varying degrees,” a spokesperson said.
