UK chilled and convenience foods group Uniq today (15 January) announced an increase in full-year sales of 3% and a return to profit in the second half of the year.

Uniq, which makes own-label salads, desserts and sandwiches for European retailers, also reported significantly improved margins and trading profitability in the second half.

Geoff Eaton, CEO of Uniq, said: “In the face of some tough conditions in the second half of the year I am pleased with the progress we have been able to make in 2007.”

Uniq admitted that progress in Northern Europe in the second half had been disappointing with a sales decline of 2%, resulting in flat sales for the year and losses in line with last year for the region.

However, a recovery from Uniq’s branded frozen business and growth from its chilled operations in France led to sales in that market rising 5%

The French business also returned to profit in the second half, in line with expectations, despite higher raw material costs.

Uniq will issue its preliminary results for the year to 31 December on 25 March.
