Fred DeLuca, founder of the Subway sandwich shop chain, has revealed ambitious expansion plans that involve quadrupling the number of UK outlets within the next decade.

There are 555 franchised Subways in the UK and short term, DeLuca aims to double that figure within the next twelve months. Long-term, the chain hopes to reach a 2,000 mark in ten years.

“The UK is a very important target market for us,” DeLuca told The Express.

The Subway chain was established in Connecticut in 1965, when DeLuca applied for a US$1,000 loan. It now boasts 15,000 restaurants in 76 countries and last year recorded a 16% increase in sales.
