A survey conducted by website Netmums.com has revealed that the majority of parents support the Food Standard Agency’s traffic lights labelling system over the guideline daily amounts (GDA) scheme supported by many food manufacturers and retailers.
An overwhelming 80% of the 17,000 parents surveyed preferred the traffic light scheme championed by the FSA, which gives food products a red, amber or green light depending on their fat, salt and sugar content.
The survey, out today (27 February), found that parents prefer the traffic-light system because it is simple and easy to understand.
The food industry has largely been adopting the GDA system which, it has been suggested, offers more detailed information on the nutritional content of foods. However, health campaigners have accused the food industry of resisting the FSA’s traffic lights proposal because many of their products would receive an amber or red light, signalling that they were high in fat, salt on sugar.
The Netmums survey is part of the website’s “Stop pushing junk to our children” campaign, which launched in 2003.
