Tesco has come under fresh attack with the Guild of Fine Foods claiming that the group’s growth is at the expense of farms, small food producers and the UK’s “food culture”.
The guild said that the retail giant’s market dominance of the grocery sector is “too dangerous” to remain unchecked.
“Any single corporation with this amount of clout can determine prices, dictate trading terms and exert an unhealthy impact on our national diet,” Bob Farrand, the guild’s national director claimed.
The Guild of Fine Foods also took a swipe at the supermarket’s Finest range. “Most of their super-premium lines are average foods in fancy packaging,” Farrand said. “Tesco’s finest are generally products inspired, created and tasted by their own buyers and new product development teams, most of whom have little or no appreciation of good food.”
