According to the latest figures on grocery market share for the 12-weeks ended 28 January, published by TNS Worldpanel, retailers witnessed a buoyant market over the Christmas period.
Tesco, the UK’s largest retailer, maintained its dominant position, posting 8% growth and increasing its share of the UK market to 31.5%. However, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons did put up some competition during the period. Asda and Sainsbury’s both grew their market share, increasing to 16.8% and 16.5% respectively, while Morrisons remained stable, posting sales growth of 4% over the comparable period of last year.
According to Edward Garner, director of research, smaller retailers such as Waitrose and Iceland also performed well during the period. “In terms of smaller retailers both Waitrose and Iceland post robust figures with Waitrose tapping into current ethical trading and healthy eating consumer trends,” he said.
“The other side of the coin is the effective collapse of Kwik Save which is fuelling the strong performance seen by Aldi and Lidl as both shops and shoppers switch over,“ he concluded.
