Leading UK supermarket operator Tesco has identified 1000 potential sites for its convenience store format, Tesco Express.
Dow Jones reports Tesco Finance Director Andrew Higginson as saying that leading Express stores generate sales worth as much as £100,000 every week. There are currently 95 Express stores, all situated on petrol forecourts.
The group had already said it planned to open hundreds of Express stores in the UK, but the figure of 1,000 had not previously been mentioned, commented Dow Jones.
Express stores sell basic food and non-food items. The format has proved so successful that it is not only being expanded at home – Tesco has already opened ten Express stores in Thailand.
