UK retailer Tesco has launched a packaging recycling trial, where customers are invited to remove and leave excess plastic and paper packaging before leaving the store.

The trial will run for six weeks at two Tesco Extra stores in Guildford and Ilminster.

The in-store pilot is part of a wider research project, which could influence future packaging strategy, the retailer said.

“We know that our customers want us to continue to reduce packaging. At the same time we need to make sure that we are preventing unnecessary food waste. We are looking to find the least amount of packaging necessary and this trial will help us to establish customers’ views,” Lucy Neville-Rolfe, Tesco executive director for corporate and legal affairs said.

The pilot will help Tesco find out what products customers’ believe could have less packaging, the company said.
