According to Tesco, customers are seeking five key things from their shopping experience: clear aisles; good prices; no queues; helpful, friendly staff; and product availability.

Looking at changes and developments in shopping trends, Potts said that time-starved consumers generally had less time to shop, desired organic healthy and locally sourced options, but not at any price: they also want value for money ad internationally but ethically sourced products.

To successfully appeal to today’s demanding customers, Potts said: “Retailers have to be in tune with customers expectations and have a positive impact on society and the environment”.

“The customer must remain at the heart of what we do,” he concluded.
