UK retailer Tesco has said that sales of local produce are expected to increase by more than GBP500m (US$918.85m) this year.
Sales of regionally-produced food and drink have increased by 40% as consumers choose to support local companies and look to reduce their carbon footprint.
Tesco said that it is investing in developing local lines to cash in on the opportunity.
“Some 84% of our customers are saying they would like to buy local lines. It’s a fantastic opportunity and that’s why we’re investing so much,” Tesco commercial director Willie Hamilton said.
