Workers at UK meat firm Tulip plan to demonstrate at a plant set for closure over fears they could lose their redundancy pay.

Around 200 workers at Tulip’s food packaging firm in Birkenhead on the Wirral will demonstrate at the plant tomorrow (13 March) in a battle to save their redundancy package, UK union Unite said.

Tulip confirmed last week that the plant is set to close. The company, part of Denmark-based meat giant Danish Crown, only acquired the business last year but said “operational issues” meant the facility had to close.

Unite said workers are angry that after just 38 days of ownership, Tulip closed down the Tranfoods meat packaging site and was now “threatening to renege on the enhanced redundancy package agreed with the trade unions”.

The union said management is threatening to only pay the statutory minimum to the 218 staff who could lose their jobs.

Unite is due to meet the company at the Abbey Road site tomorrow, and the workers will be protesting outside from 08:30 GMT.

“The workers have been treated with contempt by Tulip,” said Unite regional officer Franny Joyce. “Tomorrow’s meeting is to find out what is going on and to make the case very strongly that the firm should honour its enhanced redundancy package to former Tranfoods employees. We are currently in a 90-day consultation process.”

Tulip said it is moving production to Bodmin in Cornwall. The Birkenhead plant supplies cooked meats to Tesco.

The meat firm could not be reached for comment at the time of going to press.
