The NFU and feed supplier UKASTA have issed a reminder to farmers that disinfectant to spray down vehicles entering and leaving holdings should be available at the farm gate as well as outside the farm itself.

Speaking as deliveries of feed onto farms continue, NFU Technical Services Committee Chairman Marcus Themans said this was important to ensure vehicles leaving the farm do not inadvertently spread the disease.

He said: “It is vital that any vehicles have their wheels, wheel arches and undercarriages pressure washed to remove dirt before coming onto the farm as well as being sprayed with an approved disinfectant.

“But it is equally important that the same procedure is followed when vehicles leave the holding.

“This vital operation can only be carried out by ensuring that the disinfectant is available at the farm gate. We would urge all farmers to make sure that there is an adequate supply available at this point.”
