Unilever has renewed its contract with functional ingredients firm Provexis to develop functional ingredients for its spreads brands.

In a statement to the London Stock Exchange today (14 November), Provexis said the two companies would continue to develop a new format of its Fruitflow heart-health technology.

Fruitflow is a natural extract from tomato that has been shown in human trials to reduce the propensity for “aberrant blood clotting”, Provexis said.

The two sides have been testing a pilot version of the new Fruitflow format and Provexis said it would now work on developing a format to use in vegetable-oil based fat spreads.

Unilever will transfer certain manufacturing assets to Provexis to help with the next stage of the project.
