The Anglo-Dutch conglomerate said some 103 jobs would be lost by the end of the year but added that it would look to invest almost GBP8m (US$16m) at sites in Purfleet and Crumlin.

Unilever’s Purfleet facility produces its spreads including the Flora, Bertolli and Stork brands. The company is looking to invest GBP7m to make improvements at the site.

“Today’s announcement brings to an end a period of uncertainty and will allow us to turn our attention to consulting on and implementing the changes that need to be made to secure the site’s long term future,” Peter McMorris, Purfleet factory manager, said.

The company has also decided against closing its Pot Noodle factory in Crumlin. Some 62 jobs will be lost but Unilever will spend almost GBP1m on improving the site’s automation equipment.
