Dutch food group Vion is planning to close a bacon processing site close to the UK city of Manchester.

The company, which bought UK meat giant Grampian Country Food Group last year, said an “increasingly competitive” market and “significant” over-capacity in the sector had prompted the decision.

The closure of the site in Ashton could lead to the loss of 380 jobs, a Vion spokesman in the UK told just-food today (29 April).

The spokesman said Vion planned to switch bacon curing from the ex-Grampian site at Ashton to a facility in Malton. Bacon slicing will move to a plant in Scunthorpe.
