Dutch food group Vion has announced plans to close a frozen sausage site in the UK.

Some 118 jobs could go at Vion’s site in Cumbria if proposals to switch production to Hull go ahead.

In April, Vion said it was planning to  close a bacon processing site close to the UK city of Manchester, a move that left 380 jobs under threat.

A Vion spokesman, however, denied the cuts were a consequence of the recession and said they were part of an “ongoing” review to keep the business as efficient as possible.

“It’s not to do with the recession. It’s about ensuring the business has a strong foundation for the future,” the spokesman told just-food today (22 June).
