Dutch food group Vion will close its Sheffield sausage site in the UK.

The company confirmed the decision today (26 July) three months after announcing it was considering the move as part of plans to restructure its sausage processing in the country. Officials at Vion could not be reached for further comment.

In April, when the closure was first mooted, Vion blamed the “extremely competitive environment” in the UK.

The company said the Sheffield site – and a second in the Scottish town of Broxburn – were not using their full capacity. Vion proposed moving the work carried out at Sheffield to Broxburn, with the potential loss of 205 jobs.
