Waitrose has stopped selling milk in environmentally-friendly pouches, the UK retailer has confirmed.

The company, which introduced the milk pouch and jug concept in a bid to reduce packaging, told just-food that the concept had met with poor consumer demand.

This, a spokesperson said, had resulted in milk being thrown away.

“We simply were not selling the product, which has a limited shelf life. This unnecessary food waste was unacceptable,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that the upmarket grocer would continue to look at other policies to reduce packaging.
