UK retailer Waitrose has appointed Tony Rivenell, an executive at rival and partner Ocado, to become its new head of omnichannel delivery.

Rivenell, who was head of product and user experience at Ocado, will join Waitrose in June.

Waitrose e-commerce director Robin Phillips said: “Tony will be responsible for leading the development of Waitrose.com and for delivering a truly omnichannel shopping experience for Waitrose customers. His remit will include the development of cross channel strategies for mobile and collection services, bringing together online and in-shop customer shopping experiences.”

Rivenell’s role is a new one at Waitrose. It replaces the position of head of web and online development at the upmarket retailer. Nick Marley had held that role but a spokesperson said he left Waitrose “a few months ago to pursue other opportunities”.

Online retail specialist Ocado has delivered Waitrose own-brand products since 2000. However, Waitrose launched its own home delivery service for customers within the M25 – the motorway that circles London – in 2011.
