UK retailer Waitrose plans to expand its distribution operations in Milton Keynes with a new warehouse.

The upmarket grocer said yesterday (9 February) that it has just completed the lease of a new 300,000 square foot warehouse at Anderson Gate in south-west Milton Keynes, a few miles away from its existing warehouse in Brinklow.

Waitrose said the move will enable its Milton Keynes operations to service more branches as part of its growth strategy and free up more space for fresh foods in its Brinklow warehouse by accommodating its grocery goods operation.

The new warehouse, which will employ around 60 staff, will be operated as part of the Brinklow complex by Waitrose’s third-party logistics provider Kuehne and Nagel.

Waitrose supply chain director David Jones said: “This new site means that our supply chain will be well placed to cope with our rapid expansion over the next few years. We will be extending our capacity for fresh foods, providing a platform for us to grow this area of the business in future.”

The retailer recently announced plans to grow its convenience operations this year, with plans to open 28 outlets this year, while trialling a new store format called ‘Little Waitrose’.
