UK baker Warburtons is planning to build a new facility at its site in Burnley to produce its range of “sandwich alternatives” lines.

The company said today (2 January) it has sought planning permission for the plant, which will manufacturers products including Warburtons’ Wraps and Thins.

The products are already made at two other sites in Bristol and Bolton but Warburtons indicated more capacity was needed amid rising sales.

The privately-owned baker said the items, launched in 2010, account for almost 6% of sales. It said sales of the products had grown “87% year-on-year”.

MD Neil Campbell said: “This planned investment demonstrates our continued commitment to the future growth of the business. We recognise that consumer needs and tastes are changing and we must ensure we are fit to meet their needs, now and into the future.”
