The size of a cherry tomato, the tiger tomato is not unlike more traditional tomato varieties, Kate Todd, Marks & Spencer spokesperson told just-food.

“Other than the skin colour there is no real difference from any other tomato variety,” Todd said, adding that its strong skin made it particularly good for barbequing.

Marks and Spencer developed the new breed in response to an increasing demand for novelty produce, Todd observed. “People are wanting more unusual varieties. People are becoming more adventurous and Marks & Spencer have responded to this by developing a new and unique variety of tomato.”

Available in stores now, Todd declined to comment on how early sales have gone – so it remains to be seen whether the tiger tomatoes will become a roaring success.
