UK milk supplier Robert Wiseman Dairies is to revamp its processing and distribution network in south-west England to better serve customers in London and the south east.

Wiseman, which supplies a number of UK retailers, is to set up a GBP15m (US$23.8m) distribution centre in the Wiltshire town of Amesbury.

The group will take on some 300 staff at the facility, although it admitted some jobs could be lost from another site in the south west as the company looks to change its production footprint in the region.

Under Wiseman’s plans, the company is looking to reduce production at its Okehampton facility to a single shift but boost output at its Bridgwater site by 50% to 375m litres a year.

“We’re doing what we’ve done throughout the UK, which is try to make sure we have the most efficient distribution of milk,” a Wiseman spokesman told just-food today (28 September).

The spokesman insisted the company was still consulting on its plans with its employees and had offered those staff with jobs that could be affected at Okehampton “generous relocation packages” to move to Amesbury.

In July, Wiseman revealed that sales volumes in the first three months of its fiscal year by rose 8.5% year-on-year.
