The cuts follow an eight-month consultation at the Cromer Crab Co, which included a review of its shellfish operations.

Other than Cromer crab, which will continue to be processed locally, the volume from the site will be transferred and consolidated into Young’s factories in Grimsby in what the company says is a more “financially viable and sustainable option” for the long term.

The phased transfer of volume, which will take place between June and August, will result in 109 job cuts, the company said.

“We have looked long and hard at this and I’d like to stress that this move does not, in any way, reflect on the committed and experienced team in Cromer,” said Young’s Seafood COO Pete Ward. “Our priority is to continue to fulfil customer contracts, alongside ensuring that the employees affected by this announcement get the support they need by working closely with them, local agencies and other key stakeholders.”

The news follows an announcement earlier this week on the conclusion of a further consultations at facilities in Seaham and Whitehaven, where production will also transfer to Young’s Grimsby factories resulting in 281 jobs being cut.

The phased transfer of fish and seafood volume from these two sites is likely to result in the closure of the two facilities. However, the firm said the expansion of production at its Humberstone Road and Mardsen Road factories in Grimsby will result in the sites taking on around 321 staff.

“Any employees facing redundancy, who wish to apply for these roles, will be prioritised when filling the vacancies,” the company said.
