Unilever has launched a dairy-free and certified vegan line of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream in the US.
The ice cream will contain an almond-milk base. Unilever has developed four products, using two existing – Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Chunky Monkey – plus two new flavours, P.B & Cookies and Coffee Caramel Fudge.
“For years, non-dairy fans have been forced to watch ice cream consumers with envy and were unable to participate in a truly indulgent frozen dessert experience. Now the tables have turned,” Unilever said in a statement.
Kirsten Schimoler, principal food scientist for Ben & Jerry’s, added: “Creating these new flavours with a non-dairy base composition that meets the high expectations of Ben & Jerry’s consumers was quite a challenge. We wanted to bring the same fun with all of the creamy, funky, and chunky swirls plus the Ben & Jerry’s flavour excitement to our non-dairy fans and we nailed it.”
The new line up is available in pints at an RSP of US$5.69.
Yesterday Unilever launched a version of its Hellmann’s mayonnaise in the US that contains no eggs, creating a close competitor to fast-growing upstart Just Mayo.
