Carrefour’s biggest French staff union Force Ouvrière (FO) has officially rejected the company’s offer of a 1.5% pay increase and has called for industrial action later this month.
A spokesman for Force Ouvrière, which represents well over 80% of unionised staff, told just-food today (12 May) that the improved offer, up from an initial 1%, was in two stages – 1% back-dated to March 2010 and the remaining 0.5% in September this year.

“This is simply unacceptable at a time when the salaries of the company’s top managers are at astronomical levels by comparison. If Carrefour had offered 1.5% in one go, we may have taken it but this was not put on the table.”
The spokesman said FO was planning to stage a one-day nationwide strike at Carrefour’s French stores on Saturday 22 May and, if necessary, would take further action in June.
No-one was immediately available to comment at Carrefour when contacted by just-food.
