UK confectionery giant Cadbury has told just-food it plans to focus its Fairtrade programmes on Dairy Milk after announcing a tie-up with the ethical initiative earlier today (4 March).


The company this morning announced plans to achieve Fairtrade certification for Cadbury Dairy Milk by the end of this summer.


The group said that, for now, its Fairtrade commitments would focus on Dairy Milk.


“Cadbury Dairy Milk is by far the biggest and our number one brand so this is a massive step for us and for Fairtrade,” a spokesperson for the confectioner told just-food.


“It has taken two years of discussion to get to this point so for the moment our focus is on Dairy Milk.”

Asked whether Cadbury had plans to use the Fairtrade mark on Dairy Milk in markets outside the UK and Ireland, the company said there was a “possibility” but that at the present time it is concentrating on those two markets.


“It is all about the amount of Fairtrade cocoa on the market so it is a commitment for us to work with various suppliers,” the spokesperson added. “This action is a massive step for us and it has tripled the amount of Fairtrade cocoa coming into Ghana.


“It is a logical step for us because we have been in Ghana for about a year now. We feel we have always lead the way so it seemed logical for us to do this as the next step forward.”
