Tesco, the UK’s largest retailer, has announced plans to create 10,000 jobs by the end of the year despite recording the smallest rise in Christmas sales since 1993.

A spokesperson for Tesco said the company will create the new jobs “throughout the UK over the next year”, as it opens its new stores.

The grocery chain posted a 2.5% rise in like-for-like sales this morning, with growth on a comparable basis reaching 3.5%.

Chief executive Terry Leahy said that despite being pleased with the company’s progress, it was also “realistic”.

Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Keith Bowman said he did not believe the results will add to the concerns of Tesco’s domestic performance.

However, he added: “The company has certainly seen better years. I’m sure there will be a lot of management power fired at the company in the coming months. One of Tesco’s goals is to widen its international net so that could certainly help.”
