Campbell Soup Co. has stayed coy over its expansion plans after appointing an investment banker to fill the company’s top M&A role.

The US food group today (14 May) named Tarkan Gürkan as vice president for corporate development.

Gürkan, 40, will look to identify “acquisitions, strategic alliances and joint ventures”, Campbell said today (14 May).

However, Campbell was tight-lipped on whether it had identified any acquisition targets.

A spokesman would only confirm that Campbell’s focus remained on simple meals and vegetable-based beverages.

“For a company of our size, it is necessary to have a person like Mr Gürkan overseeing corporate development but, as company policy, we wouldn’t speculate on what we may or may not do,” the spokesman said.

Gürkan, a former Nabisco Holdings and PepsiCo executive, started his career at Turkish conglomerate Koc Group.
