ConAgra Foods today (19 May) indicated that it expects “limited” production to resume at its Slim Jim facility in Garner, North Carolina, in August.

Last week, an explosion caused the site’s roof to collapse, resulting in three deaths and approximately 40 injuries.

A spokesperson told just-food that while work is carried out on the production facility the group plans to shift production to another ConAgra plant and use third-party assistance in product packaging.

“The production side of the Garner plant was not damaged by the explosion. The packaging side was significantly damaged and will be closed until further notice,” the spokesperson said.

“For now, we are shipping the product from our existing inventory with some reduction in service levels. We believe we can be back to acceptable service levels during the fall.”

In a regulatory filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, ConAgra said that it expected insurance to cover the majority of the costs and losses associated with the explosion. The company expects its business-interruption insurance to “substantially compensate” for any lost profits from the disruption.

ConAgra reiterated previous guidance of EPS growth of 8-10%.
