A probe by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce into alleged dumping of US-produced chicken products has been deemed “unjustified” by the US chicken industry.

The probe comes two days after President Obama imposed tariffs on Chinese tires.

China’s poultry industry has long complained of unfair trade practices by the US. In March, the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Foodstuffs, Native Produce & Animal By-Products (CCCFNA) called for a ban on imports of US poultry in response to a congressional spending bill restricting China’s poultry sales.

A statement from the National Chicken Council today (14 September), said: “China’s announcement is obviously in direct retaliation for the US action in putting tariffs on tires made in China.”

It added: “Charges of dumping of poultry products are completely unjustified. Our companies engage in normal trade with China, not dumping. We believe chicken is being targeted by the Chinese because of the concerns they have expressed over the provision in the US appropriations act that prohibits the US Department of Agriculture from determining China’s ability to ship fully cooked poultry products to the United States.”

The ministry, however, said the investigation was in accordance with WTO rules and Chinese laws. It added that China firmly opposes protectionism.

The Chicken Council said the US exported 436,544 metric tons of chicken, valued at US$376m, to China in the first seven months of 2009.  In 2008, the chicken trade with China totalled 757, 786 metric tons valued at $682m.
