US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Environmental Protection Agency administrator Gina McCarthy have announced plans to halve national food waste by 2030.

The US' first ever national food waste reduction goal will see the federal government lead a new partnership with charitable organisations, faith-based organisations, the private sector and local, state and tribal governments to reduce food loss and waste in order to improve overall food security and conserve natural resources.

The move was welcomed by a number of industry majors including Kellogg, FreshDirect and Albertsons.

"As a global food company, Kellogg believes we have a significant role to play in helping to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture," said Kris Charles, VP at Kellogg. "We support the USDA and EPA in their efforts to launch the nation's first food waste reduction goals and are committed to doing our part to halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer level, and to reduce food losses along the production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses by 2030."

According to the United Nations Environment Programme, in the US, 30-40% of the food supply is wasted, equalling more than 20 pounds of food per person per month.

Jason Ackerman, co-Founder and CEO at FreshDirect, added: "Reducing food waste is a significant issue facing food retailers. Our work with community partners like City Harvest to reduce food loss can be a model for others, but clearly more can be done. FreshDirect is proud to stand with President Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on this important initiative."
