US food safety authorities have warned that the country is still in the midst of a salmonella outbreak, despite the fact that the source of contamination has been identified.
Products containing peanut butter and peanut oil supplied by the Peanut Corporation of America, the company at the centre of the US salmonella scare, have been removed from the shelves and recalled.
To date, a range of manufacturers and retailers have recalled more than 2,000 products.
However, according to the Food and Drug Administration, the number of people falling ill continues to grow as the public is still consuming contaminated peanut products.
The latest reported illness, beginning of 28 January, carried the case count to 642 in 44 states. The outbreak has been linked to nine deaths.

By GlobalData“The outbreak is continuing, though the numbers of new cases have declined modestly since December,” the FDA said in a statement. “Many recently ill persons report eating peanut butter and other recalled peanut-containing products.”
According to a spokesperson for the FDA, while products found in grocery stores are now safe, people are continuing to eat infected products at home.
“Consumers really need to go through their pantries, check for recalled products and through them out,” the spokesperson told just-food.
