“Better for you” foods such as organic, light and low calorie products, will see the strongest US category growth over the next decade, new research has suggested.
According to The Future of Eating study from the NPD Group, Organic sales are expected to grow by 41% during the next ten years, while light, diet and low calorie sales are expected to grow by 18%.
“As the population ages, levels of concern regarding food and nutrition are expected to rise,” said the report’s author, Ann Hanson. “For this reason, better for you food options are forecasted to grow strongly over the next ten years.”
Eat-at-home restaurant meals and appetizers are also expected to be among the fastest growing food trends, according to the report, with growth projected at 20% and 16% respectively.
