Seafood maker Bumble Bee Foods has reduced the sodium contained in its line of canned albacore and light meat tuna products.
Bumble Bee albacore products will now contain 140mg of sodium or less per serving – a reduction of 44% from 2008. Light meat tuna has been reduced to 180mg per serving.
The reduced-sodium products will be rolled out to supermarkets throughout the US next month.
Further plans to cut sodium are “in the works” for the remaining products in the company’s portfolio, the company added.
“The completion of the first stage of our commitment to reduce sodium levels across our entire Bumble Bee portfolio, in order to provide consumers with even healthier products, is an important milestone in the history of our brand,” president and CEO Chris Lischewski said.
The news comes in the same week that the US Food and Drug Administration revealed that it is considering recommendations to implement mandatory sodium levels for food products.
