A listeria outbreak that killed 30 people in the US has come to an end, according to a statement from the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC).

The epidemic, which infected 146 people and also caused a pregnant woman to miscarriage, was the worst US food-borne outbreak since 1924. The ages of the deceased ranged from 48 to 96 years, with an average age of 81.

The outbreak was linked to a batch of Rocky Fords cantaloupes from Colorado-based Jensen Farms. In September, Jensen Farms recalled 594 pounds of fresh-cut cantaloupe, which were packaged in trays and as an ingredient in a mixed fruit medley, after the outbreak was traced back to the company.

A report on the CDC website said: “It is possible that consumers might still have recalled products in their homes if cantaloupe from Jensen Farms or foods made with this cantaloupe was frozen. However, available evidence indicates that this outbreak is over.”

In October, the Food and Drug Administration sent a letter to Jensen Farms warning them to take corrective action after it found “widespread contamination” throughout its facilities, indicating “poor sanitary practices”.
