US food giant ConAgra Foods has issued a statement explicitly clarifying that it has been approached only as a witness in an investigation into alleged fraud by a company it supplies in Iraq.

News of the investigation into Public Warehousing Company, which supplies food to the US military in Iraq, came to light yesterday (17 Oct).

“ConAgra Foods has been assured by the Department of Defense, which is leading the investigation of Public Warehousing Company, that its role in this investigation is limited to that of a witness,” the company said.

The company continued: “ConAgra Foods first received a request for information from the Department of Defense in January 2007 regarding its inquiry into Public Warehousing Company’s activities. Since then, ConAgra Foods has cooperated with the Department of Defense’s investigation of Public Warehousing Company and provided the relevant records and testimony to the government investigators.”
