ConAgra Foods has closed another of its plants in the US as it continues to streamline the business.
The US group said today (18 April) that it would shut a site in the state of Michigan and switch production of its Reddi-wip product to a plant in Indianapolis.
A ConAgra spokesperson told just-food that the closure is the ninth site of ten to 12 plants to close. “It’s about cost, it’s about efficiency and it helps us consolidate our refrigerated business,” she said.
The spokesperson said ConAgra could not modernise the plant in Holland, Michigan due to the site’s infrastructure. By contrast, she said, ConAgra had already installed two new lines at the Indianapolis site.
The restructuring programme across the US is expected to save ConAgra some US$100m in costs.
The spokesperson added that some 60 jobs in Michigan would be lost with the closure of the Holland facility, while around the same number would be created in Indianapolis.
