The US dairy industry will stop its long-running advertising campaign that claims a diet rich in dairy products can help people lose weight.

The decision to pull the ads is due to a complaint made by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a pressure group that promotes a vegan diet.

The PCRM claimed that these and other ad campaigns linking diary products to weight management and weight loss were deceptive. The group has brought civil suits against companies that have linked weight loss claims with dairy products, and filed a complaint with the USA Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

The FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Lydia Parnes said in a statement: “The best course of action at this time is to discontinue all advertising involving weight loss claims until further research provides stronger, more conclusive evidence.”

Meanwhile, milk advertisers say they will run ads consistent with 2005 ‘Dietary Guidelines for Americans’ from the US Department of Agriculture.
