Groupe Danone has agreed a deal with the sandwich retail chain Subway’s in the US that will see its Dannon yoghurt sold in over 20,000 stores nationwide.

The move has been heralded as part of Danone’s plans to turn the US into its top yoghurt market within the next five years. It currently rates as number three behind France and Spain.

Speaking to the news service MarketWatch, Juan Carlos Dalto, chief executive of Dannon Co., the US subsidiary of the French dairy giant said: “We see the US as a tremendous opportunity.”

He added that selling to restaurants “has always been an obsession for us, but it hasn’t always been easy for us to build a sustainable and profitable business. This is the first time we find a clear win-win situation. This would give us massive reach.”
