Hannaford Supermarkets, a US unit of Belgian retailer Delhaize, has confirmed that it is planning head office redundancies in an effort to reduce costs.

The company is offering a voluntary resignation programme to employees at its corporate office in Scarborough, Maine. The scheme, which was launched yesterday (2 December), will run until 16 January.

“We are not sharing expectations on [the] number of positions or savings,” a spokesperson for the company told just-food.

However, the spokesperson did emphasise the limited nature of the programme. “The initiative applies only to the Hannaford home office in Scarborough,” he said.

Employees at the company’s 167 supermarkets and across its distribution and trucking divisions will not be affected.

The voluntary resignation programme will offer severance based on tenure, the company said.
