Dole Food Co. plans to offset the carbon emissions from the transport of its bananas and pineapples in Costa Rica.

The US group said the move is part of a broader agreement it signed last August with the Costa Rican government to produce a carbon-neutral supply chain for bananas and pineapples.

“Dole is determined to take the lead in environmentally-friendly production and distribution methods,” said Dole president and CEO David DeLorenzo.

Under the deal, Dole will buy Dole carbon credits from government-certified forestry projects.

Costa Rica as a whole is seeking to become carbon neutral by 2021.
