US bakery firm Flowers Foods has bought land in the state of Kentucky for a new manufacturing facility.

The company has secured 30 acres of land in the city of Bardstown and has the option to buy another 24 acres. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Flowers Foods plans to build a 200,000-square-foot bakery on the property that will produce fresh breads and buns for markets in Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana.

Construction is expected to begin in January with some 100 jobs to be created. The company said it would spend US$52m on the bakery over the next two years.

“Bardstown is strategically located at the northern part of our current market territory for our fresh baked foods and this bakery will help serve new markets as we expand northward,” said chairman, CEO and president George Deese. “The added capacity will also help relieve production pressure at our other bakeries.”
